“How can you handle your mentoring work along with caring for your family in the camp?”

“These are also our kids—the kids who will build Syria in the future. So I care about them as I care for my own kids,” said Mariam.

Mariam is a mentoring coordinator for Questscope’s mentoring program in Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp—a role that has made her a mother to many.

Moms are the most powerful beings with the most difficult job ever. It takes tremendous strength to raise a child in normal conditions, but imagine trying to do so in the hard living conditions of a refugee camp. Imagine having to explain to your son or daughter why they even have to be there in the first place.  Imagine overcoming the trauma of leaving the peace of your own house to step out into the unknown.

It takes a mom, and a mentor.

Being a mentor is one of the many tasks assigned to a mom by nature. In turn, our mentors and educational facilitators portray the same traits of a mother. They are devoted to saving these Syrian children from the traumas of the war. They ignite hope and faith in the hearts and minds of these young boys and girls, moving them towards a better future—breaking the cycle of violence and replacing all their negative energy with the will to change and learn.

As we celebrate our moms, join us to support these moms, and mentors, to keep up their quest for peace in the minds of these young children.
